The
conception of my book, A BIRD IN THE HAND, surprisingly took place
over seven years ago. Then the idea was shelved, as, in my quest to
have some of my work published in book form, I switched to another
inspiration. I am probably better known in the British sporting
press with my dogs, lurchers and Scottish deerhounds, so it was to
these that I made the change. Then, I was once again drawn to A
BIRD IN THE HAND, and this became my first published book.
To assist
in the books conception, I employed my good friend Sheena Reid, a Scottish
artist from the kingdom of Fife, to do the bulk of my illustrations.
Sheena thought it may add to the book, if I did some illustrations
myself. I am an artist with words, not paints, but I did my bit, doing
all of the bird drawings. Sheena’s ability was uncanny at times, I wrote
her a description of the characters, and she sent back drawings that were
so reminiscent of the people I was writing about.
Also from
Scotland, I recruited Dr. Richard Cox to do my books editing and proof
reading. Although at times Richard pointed out the folly of my ways,
he kept the books flavour, while never changing my writing style. To both Sheena and
Richard, I must give special thanks, without their help and input, I doubt
if I would have created such a quality book.

In A Bird
in the Hand, I tell of the beginnings of my involvement with keeping
birds, and also of wild bird catchers known to me during my youth. I write
of the ways of these men not only as trappers and poachers, but as most
knowledgeable aviculturalists and countrymen, from who I learnt so much.
I have also attempted to bring to the reader, an idea of the life and
times. So, who will benefit from the reading of my book, well, it will
have appeal to anyone interested in wildlife, the countryside, birds,
trapping, poaching, bird-keeping as well as local historians. My
childhood, and the men I have written about, has left their mark on the
rest of my life. An interest in wildlife and a great affinity with bird
and beast have since been integral components of my existence, and, always
will be.
Don’t be
frightened. Come back with me to the hard mining areas of the north-east
of England during the early 1960’s, where I will take you on vivid
journeys into woods, fields, hedgerows and secret bird-sheds. I will
introduce you to my friends. I will make you laugh, and I may even make
you feel sad. But all in all, I will offer you the read of a book that
you won’t be able to put down
